Rachel Bretz’s professional life highlights a legacy of passion, knowledge and leadership in the water utility industry. Over her two-decade-long career at American Water, she has progressed from laboratory analyst to director of water quality and environmental compliance, safeguarding access to clean drinking water for millions and mentoring tomorrow’s leaders in the water industry. Her journey reflects her commitment to excellence and innovation.

At a young age, Bretz was interested in science and decided to complete her Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. Her education helped her understand how scientific principles could address real-world issues and gave her the technical background to excel at her job. After graduation, she joined American Water in 2001 as a laboratory analyst, examining water samples and ensuring compliance with safety standards. She was promoted to quality control specialist in 2005, where she upheld strict regulatory requirements in water treatment procedures.

A licensed class A water operator, she joined Illinois American Water in 2010, a subsidiary of American Water, where she worked for seven years as the water quality supervisor. In this capacity, she oversaw testing protocols, managed compliance reporting and trained the company’s employees, showcasing her expertise in interpreting data and anticipating potential issues.

By 2017, Bretz’s operational expertise led her to become production supervisor for the East St. Louis water treatment plant. There, she bridged the gap between water quality and operations, ensuring treatment processes operated effectively while maintaining the highest safety measures.

In 2020, Bretz’s expertise earned her the position of director of water quality and environmental compliance, a role that placed her at the top of Illinois American Water’s statewide water quality initiatives. She was responsible for managing all laboratories, water quality, environmental stewardship and environmental rules and regulations. She also led a statewide team of experts dedicated to delivering safe, clean water to 1.3 million people.

During her tenure, Illinois American Water recorded some notable achievements. Its Peoria water treatment plant received national recognition from the American Water Works Association’s partnership for safe water program. The district was awarded the director’s award for maintaining a phase III certification for 20 years—a reflection of Bretz’s dedication to going beyond regulatory requirements.

Under Bretz’s leadership, her team publishes yearly water quality reports. She has also strongly advocated environmental compliance and sustainability, promoting innovation in water resource management. In addition, Bretz has a great understanding of SCADA systems, contract administration and emerging water treatment technology.

Her journey from a chemistry graduate to a nationally recognized water quality expert proves that expertise, leadership and a commitment to service can have a transformational impact on any industry.
